Albos Camera

Albos Camera is a custom camera system for Blender's Cycles renderer, built for artists who want more control over depth of field and bokeh. It extends Blender's native camera with advanced lens controls such as spherical aberration, optical vignetting, bokeh edge shaping, edge tinting and more, making it easy to create everything from realistic photographic lenses to highly stylised cinematic looks. Seamlessly integrated into Blender as an add-on, Albos Camera gives you the creative freedom to shape your bokeh exactly the way you want.



The addon works using a custom OSL script for the Cycles camera, which is currently only supported on Optix graphics cards and CPU rendering. If you are rendering on an AMD GPU or on Mac Metal GPU, the render will appear black.

The main factor that inspired the creation of the Albos Camera is the Spherical Aberration feature found in Redshift render - also found in Vray as "bokeh Bias" - also found in Luxcore render as the "Inverse Exponential" bokeh distribution - This feature pushes the brightness of the bokeh towards the edge of the aperture shape. When pushed to the maximum, this features turns the bokeh from a flat disk, to a ring-like halo.

Optical Vignetting simulates the natural occlusion that occurs in real camera lenses, where the lens barrel begins to block light rays as they approach the edge of the sensor. This transforms circular bokeh into the distinctive cat-eye shapes seen in many photographic lenses, adding another layer of realism and helping to recreate the subtle imperfections that give real-world optics their unique character.

Focal Length

Controls the zoom level of the camera lens.



Focus Object

Automatically focuses the camera on the selected object.



Focus Distance

Sets the distance from the camera where the image appears in sharp focus.



F-Stop

Controls the aperture size, affecting the strength of the depth of field.



Blades

Sets the number of aperture blades, controlling the shape of the bokeh.



Bokeh Roundness

Rounds the aperture shape, smoothly transforming polygons into Reuleaux polygons.


Rotation

Rotates the aperture shape.



Ratio

Stretches the aperture horizontally or vertically to create anamorphic bokeh.



Spherical Aberration

Redistributes the brightness towards the edge of the bokeh, transforming soft discs into bright halo-like rings.



Optical Vignetting

Simulates cat-eye bokeh by occluding the aperture towards the edge of the image.



Bokeh Edge

Adds a bright rim around the edge of the aperture shape.



Edge Thickness

Controls the thickness of the bokeh edge.



Edge Tint

Applies a colour tint to the edge of the bokeh while leaving the centre unchanged.



Onion Ring Strength

Controls the brightness of the onion ring pattern.



Ring Frequency

Controls the number of rings within the bokeh.



Ring Randomness

Adds natural variation to the onion ring pattern using procedural noise.

Installation


You can either install the addon through the Extensions platform - www.extensions.blender.org - or as a standalone .zip file.


Install the add-on through Blender's Edit → Preferences → Add-ons → Install... menu, then enable Albos Camera. Once enabled, select any camera and enable Use Albos Camera in the Camera properties to replace Blender's standard Depth of Field controls.
